Work From Home Opportunities - the challenges

Just the thought of work from home opportunities seems so very exciting. Wow, a chance to earn money and stay at home. No commute, no getting up early to dress up for work, and every day can be "shorts and sandals" day at the office. Besides, there is no place like home.

It's a great situation if you're cut out for it. Not everyone can handle working from home. Not everyone can handle working on their own. Even with telecommute ties to a "mothership", working from home has its challenges.

Let's look at some of the challenges of working from home. You'll need to know what they are and can plan to overcome them. Then, let's look at opportunities to work from home that I think are worthwhile to consider, like telecommuting and limited enterprises.

Here is a quick listing of the challenges associated with working out of your house. Just be aware that what looks like a bed of roses has a bunch of thorns in it too.

The many challenges of working from home include limited or none of the following:

  • fellowship
  • supervision
  • guidance from senior staff
  • management interface
  • exposure to others
  • team building
  • teamwork
  • social interaction
  • recognition of time and effort

Work from home opportunities also involve dealing with things that you don't normally have in a regular work environment. Things like:

  • distracting activities
  • noises
  • personal obligations that "come calling"
  • home phone calls
  • friends and family

Also, remember that you'll need a dedicated work space at your home, and this can get in the way of home life. Whether it's a room above the garage, a place in basement, or taking over part of the den, you'll need a place for your work that will be undisturbed.

You may also have to kid-proof your work environment to protect the time you have invested in your work products.

Each of these challenges can be overcome, but it often takes the right employee, the right employer culture, and the right work activity to be successful.
